Man, 28, facing felony abuse charges after a confrontation

A 28-year-old Lahaina man was arrested Tuesday night after he violated a restraining order, holding a large kitchen knife while confronting a woman and covering her nose and mouth until she lost consciousness, police said.

Bail was set at $40,000 for Anthony Martin, who was charged with felony abuse by strangulation, abuse and 18 counts of violating a temporary restraining order.

Lahaina patrol officers were called to a condominium unit in the 3600 area of Lower Honoapiilani Road at about 7 p.m. Tuesday after the woman was confronted by Martin as he held the large kitchen knife, police said. She believed that she and their 1-month-old son were in danger, police said.

Martin covered the woman’s nose and mouth, preventing her from yelling, before she lost consciousness and was dragged into the upstairs bedroom, police said. When she regained consciousness, she tried to flee but fell down the stairs when Martin reached for her leg and tripped her, police said. She suffered two scrapes to her left leg and a bruise to her right knee.

Martin went downstairs and threatened the woman, police said. She thought Martin had fled before police arrived, but he was found in the house and arrested without incident.

Martin also had violated a temporary restraining order by contacting the woman 18 times, police said.
