Man found with gun charged in burglary
A 21-year-old Wailuku man is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail after he was arrested when Kihei patrol officers saw him carrying what looked like a gun case while walking along South Kihei Road last week, police said.
Evan Waldron is charged with first-degree burglary and two counts each of first-degree theft, second-degree theft and third-degree theft.
He was arrested at 2:30 a.m. May 8 after he was seen carrying the hard plastic case that resembled ones used to store long guns, police said. When officers stopped Waldron, he acknowledged there was a gun in the case and said he had found it, police said.
A police investigation determined that the firearm and other property had been stolen in a burglary of a residence on North Alaniu Place in Kihei. The burglary hadn’t been reported when police stopped Waldron.
Along with the firearm, Waldron was found with a cellphone, two hard drives and another electronic device, police said.
During his arraignment Tuesday in 2nd Circuit Court, Waldron pleaded not guilty to the charges. An Aug. 5 trial is set for him. Waldron was ordered to stay away from the home that was burglarized and its occupants.
