Matsuri fun and food
FIRST PHOTO: A downpour couldn’t dampen the spirits of King Kekaulike High School 9th-grader Soleil de Zwart (from left), 14; Seabury Hall 9th-grader Lilia Maeda, 14: and King Kekaulike 9th-grader Charlotte Bridge, 15; as they take the empty stage to entertain their friends at Saturday’s 13th Maui Matsuri on the Great Lawn of the University of Hawaii Maui College.
SECOND PHOTO: The event celebrated Japanese culture with offerings of food, art, crafts and entertainment. Included in the cultural matsuri, or festival, were contests involving pieces of Japanese culture, such as saimin eating and manga art. Forgoing chopsticks in favor of his hands, Kahului’s Tyler Orikasa wins his fifth-straight Maui Matsuri saimin eating contest Saturday afternoon. Clancy Wolf of Seattle (seated next to Orikasa) finished second.
