Maui County students to appear on quiz program

Teams from King Kekaulike and Molokai high schools will be competing in the “It’s Academic Hawaii” quiz program, which will be televised on KFVE, Channel 5, beginning this month.

The program tests high schoolers’ knowledge of math, science, history, geography, literature, sports, current events and Hawaiian language and culture.

The program will be hosted by Keahi Tucker, Hawaii News Now anchor, and Gov. Neil Abercrombie and Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui will be among the guests asking questions.

During each broadcast, three teams with three players (and one alternate) will compete in a several-round format.

“Our goal with this broadcast is to showcase and acknowledge the efforts being made academically throughout the state in both public and private schools on all the Hawaiian Islands,” said KFVE General Manager John Fink.

Tucker said that youths will face questions that most adults would have trouble answering.

“Strategy and timing matter as much as the right answers,” he said.

The show will be televised at 7 p.m. and began May 6 and will be streamed live on Each week’s program will be rebroadcast on the following Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

King Kekaulike will appear with Ho’ala School and Kaimuki High School of Oahu on June 10.

Molokai will appear with Mililani High School and Sacred Hearts Academy of Oahu on June 24.

Semifinals will be held July 8, 15 and 22 with the championship match on July 29.
