Motorcyclist dies from his injuries

A 70-year-old man died early Tuesday morning after suffering critical injuries in a motorcycle crash last month in Paia, police said.

Pukalani resident Allen L. Vierra Sr. had been at Maui Memorial Medical Center since April 27 when he lost control of his black 2001 Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle while driving north on Baldwin Avenue, said Maui police spokesman Lt. William Juan. At approximately 10:42 a.m., Vierra had fallen on his left side about a fifth of a mile south of Puakou Place and suffered critical injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

On Tuesday, he was pronounced dead at 2:35 a.m. at the hospital, Juan said.

Through eyewitness reports, police believe speed was not a factor in the 20 mph speed limit area, said Lt. Ricky Uedoi, commander of the Maui police Traffic Section.

However, police are still investigating other factors involved in the crash.

Vierra’s death marks Maui County’s eighth traffic-related fatality this year. There were 13 at this time last year, police said.
