The multipurpose facility replaces the old cafeteria, which burned down in December 2005. School Principal Susan Alivado said that the disappointment and sadness felt when the former cafeteria was gutted has been replaced by happiness over the new modern structure. The new cafeteria will be able to hold the entire student body, will compress the current three lunch periods into two and has a water filtration system. During the celebration, shouts and whistles could be heard from protesters lining Baldwin Avenue outside the cafeteria. The protesters said they were speaking out against a decision to hold a lottery to determine the 40 students who will be in next year’s kindergarten class for the school’s Hawaiian Language Immersion Program.
