Two men convicted in meth case

A federal grand jury Friday found two men guilty of conspiring to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine on Maui between 2004 and 2009.

The verdicts convicting Jeffrey Javier, 58, of Kahului and Reynaldo Agudo, 45, of Keaau on the Big Island were reached after a five-day trial in U.S. District Court in Honolulu.

Javier also was convicted of attempting to possess 80 grams of methamphetamine with intent to distribute it on June 5, 2007, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office in Honolulu.

Florence Nakakuni, U.S. attorney for the District of Hawaii, said the evidence presented at trial showed that Javier and Agudo agreed with others to distribute methamphetamine that was sent from California by express mail services to Maui during 2006 and 2007. The evidence also established that Javier and another person financed the shipment of 80 grams of pure methamphetamine, which was intercepted at Honolulu International Airport on June 5, 2007, by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the news release said.

When they are sentenced by Judge Leslie Kobayashi in August, both Javier and

Agudo both face up to life in prison, with a mandatory minimum 10-year term, on each charge.

The investigation resulting in the charges was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Maui Police Department Vice Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Muehleck handled the prosecution.
