Unscheduled cane fire burns 5 acres in Paia

An unscheduled and unauthorized sugar cane burn in Paia on Sunday afternoon burned 5 acres with an estimated loss of $25,000 to Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., a fire official said Sunday evening.

Firefighters received the alarm at about 2:30 p.m. of the burning cane in Paia off Baldwin Avenue, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. Units from Paia, Makawao and Kahului responded to the blaze.

When crews arrived on the scene, they found about 2 acres of cane on fire. Fire crews employed hardlines, which are hoses on reels that can be charged with water while being pulled for quick attack of the fire, said Mainaga.

HC&S equipment and workers arrived on the scene, and fire crews were released at about 4 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, he said.
