UPDATE: Video of boats capsized at Mala Wharf

Three boats were capsized by unusually high surf Friday near Mala Wharf on the west side, fire officials said.

The boats washed ashore at 10:41 a.m. within a quarter mile stretch between the wharf and the Lahaina Crossroads Apartments, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

He said debris was scattered around each of the 30-to-40 foot vessels that apparently had been pulled from their moorings and battered by “unusually high surf conditions.”

Witnesses told fire officials that they saw no one on the boats or in the water prior to or during the incident.

Officials from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources arrived on the scene and were looking into the incident.
