Chamber seeks more fireworks donations

The Maui Chamber of Commerce issued a plea this week for more donations for the annual Fourth of July fireworks in Lahaina after the organization discovered that its costs have risen around $5,000 more this year than last.

The cost of the fireworks has risen and so have insurance costs because larger crowds are expected to attend the event, the chamber said. It needs around $10,500 “to pull the event off,” an announcement said.

In May, chamber President Pamela Tumpap estimated the event’s minimum budget at $44,000, but since then costs have risen to $49,450.

Maui County’s Office of Economic Development is contributing $10,000, and so far Maui businesses have contributed $26,565. Hard Rock Cafe is the top contributor at $1,500. Other major donors with $1,000 each include Expeditions, Kimo’s Restaurant, Old Lahaina Luau, Royal Lahaina Resort and VIP Food Service.

“It comes down to the wire each year, but we have a very generous community who cherishes this event,” Tumpap said. “Losing this important celebration is not an option. It is too important. Can you imagine a Fourth of July without fireworks? We don’t want to.”

All public donations, including individuals and businesses, will be accepted. Contributions may be mailed to 95 Mahalani St., Suite 22A, Wailuku 96793. For more information, call 244-0081.
