Four police officers promoted

Maui police officers Nicholas Angell, Terence Gomez, Shane Yoshizawa and Harry Matsuura have been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Angell began his Maui Police Department career in 1997 after moving to Maui from the Big Island. He has been assigned to Molokai, Lahaina and Wailuku patrol divisions, serving as a field training officer and Special Response Team member while in Wailuku.

Angell has been assigned to Hana High and Elementary School as the school resource officer and Drug Abuse Resistance Education instructor. He will be assigned to the Lanai Patrol District next month.

Angell and his wife, Anela, have two children, Nika and James.

Gomez, a St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School graduate, attended Chaminade University before being hired by the Police Department in February 1999. He has been assigned to the Wailuku Patrol District, serving as a field training officer, member of the SPEED team and working as school resource officer at Iao Intermediate School. Gomez was awarded a Silver Medal of Valor for rescuing a woman from a burning house in Kahului in 2011.

He works in the Kihei Patrol District.

Gomez and his wife, Kelii-Ann, have three children, Kira, Tiki and Ty.

Yoshizawa joined the Police Department in 1995 and has worked in the Lahaina Patrol District. He was a field training officer from 2000 to 2009 and a member of the Special Response Team from 2000 to 2005. He was assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit for three years before his promotion. He works at the department’s receiving desk.

Yoshizawa and his wife, Karilee, have two children, Kailee and Kysen.

Matsuura, a 1994 Maui High School graduate, began his police career in February 2000, working in the Wailuku Patrol District before being assigned to the Hana Patrol District. He was a school resource officer and Drug Abuse Resistance Education instructor at Hana High and Elementary School. In August 2004, he was assigned to the Lahaina Patrol District and became a field training officer, firearms instructor, arrest and defense tactics instructor, verbal judo instructor and crisis intervention officer. He was awarded a Bronze Medal of Valor for his actions during a 2007 house fire in Lahaina.

Matsuura is working in the Lahaina Patrol District before he begins his assignment in the Molokai Patrol District.

The promotions took effect June 1.
