Halemau‘u parking lot to close

The Halemau’u trailhead parking lot will be closed Tuesday through June 25 while work is done on disabled accessibility improvements, Haleakala National Park officials announced.

The parking lot is at the 7,990-foot elevation in the park’s Summit District, officials said.

Visitors must remove their vehicles from the Halemau’u trailhead parking lot before Tuesday. The Leleiwi Overlook parking lot will reopen Tuesday.

During the Halemau’u parking lot closure, hikers, cabin users and campers may be dropped off or picked up at the hiker pullout near the Halemau’u lot, officials said. A designated walkway will lead hikers through the closed parking lot to the trailhead.

Alternatively, back-country visitors may park at the Supply Trail area near Hosmer Grove, at the 7,000-foot elevation. The Supply Trail has a 2.2-mile path that connects with Halemau’u trail. Another option is to park at the Haleakala Visitor Center at 9,740 feet in elevation and use the Sliding Sands trail to enter the crater.
