Man burned in condo blaze
Maui police officers rescued an 84-year-old man Wednesday night from a burning second-story apartment in the Kaanapali Royale, officials said.
The resident, who is handicapped, suffered burns, and paramedics took him to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition, officials said. Police said he was in critical condition and being treated at an Oahu hospital Thursday morning.
Lahaina and Napili firefighters responded to the 10:50 p.m. alarm at 2560 Kekaa Drive, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. Firefighters had the blaze under control at 11:15 and extinguished at 11:27 p.m.
Although the fire’s cause was preliminarily undetermined, the blaze is most probably accidental, he said.
Damage was estimated at $180,000 to the 1,800-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment, with $20,000 in damage to its contents, Mainaga said.
