Man injured in Kaanapali fire dies

An 84-year-old man who was rescued last week from a burning second-story apartment at the Kaanapali Royal died Saturday at Straub Clinic & Hospital on Oahu, police said.

Jurgen Vahrenkamp, who was disabled, was carried out of his unit by two police officers Wednesday and treated at Maui Memorial Medical Center, said Maui police spokesman Lt. William Juan. Vahrenkamp suffered burns and was taken to the Honolulu hospital in critical condition Thursday morning.

The cause of death was not released.

Lahaina and Napili firefighters responded to an alarm at 10:50 p.m. at 2560 Kekaa Drive, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. He said firefighters had the blaze under control at 11:15 p.m. and extinguished at 11:27 p.m.

Although the fire’s cause was preliminarily undetermined, the blaze was most likely accidental, he said.

Damage was estimated at $180,000 to the 1,800-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with $20,000 in damage to its contents, Mainaga said.
