Woman injured by fall on slippery rocks is rescued

A 66-year-old Kihei woman’s search for a lost dog went awry Friday morning when she slipped on mossy rocks in a stream along Honopou Road in Haiku, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Paia and Kahului firefighters and the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter responded to the 11:18 a.m. alarm to help the woman, who had suffered an injury to her right shoulder and was unable to walk out using a trail, he said.

The woman and a female co-worker had been looking for a dog when she fell about a half mile makai of Hana Highway, Mainaga said. The trail was too slippery and steep for her to risk trying to hike back to the roadway, he reported.

The helicopter crew airlifted the woman to paramedics who took her in stable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, Mainaga said.

The woman’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
