Brush fire comes within inches of cottage

Firefighters on Saturday extinguished a brush fire that came within inches of a cottage in Kailua near Mile Marker 10 on Hana Highway, a fire official said.

A Paia engine company and a Kahului tanker responded to the fire at 4:16 p.m., said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

He said the half-acre brush fire was burning mauka of the highway. Fire crews reported that the fire came within inches of the cottage before being brought under control at 5:09 p.m., Mainaga said. He said no damage was reported to the cottage.

Hana Highway remained open while crews battled the blaze. The fire was extinguished at 6:02 p.m.

The cause of the fire was undetermined after an investigation.
