Crews conquer pair of brush fires

E. Maui fire 100% contained

A brush fire on the Ulupalakua side of Manawainui Gulch at Milepost 27.5 on Piilani Highway was declared 100 percent contained at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The fire, which was reported at 3:07 p.m. Saturday, involved 65 acres on the mauka side of the highway, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Although contained, the fire was not considered extinguished, Mainaga said, and one crew remained at the scene monitoring for flare-ups Sunday night.


Kahului blaze is extinguished

Fire crews fought a brush fire off of Hana Highway and behind Kmart on Saturday night.

Firefighters responding to the 10:06 p.m. call found a half-acre of dry grass and thick shrubbery on fire, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. The blaze was called under control at 11:13 p.m. and extinguished at 12:04 a.m. Sunday.

There were no injuries and no damage was reported, Mainaga said.
