High wind advisory for Haleakala

The National Weather Service has posted a wind advisory for the higher elevations of Haleakala through 6 p.m. Wednesday.

A strong ridge building at the surface and in the atmosphere will produce strong easterly winds across higher elevations of Maui and the Big Island, the weather service said Tuesday. The winds are expected to be 20 to 35 mph with localized gusts of more than 50 mph.

The high winds may spread to lower elevations in Maui County Wednesday evening.

Motorists should exercise caution due to falling tree branches. High profile vehicles also may be affected by the high wind.
