It’s all in the family
First Photo: Hana paddlers and their guests from Tahiti carry the koa canoe Te Tani Hana Hoe to shore Saturday.
Second Photo: Jean-Pierra Temanupaioura (right) of Tahiti shakes hands with Hana Canoe Club paddler Alohilani Kapoi after paddling with his grandchildren and children in Saturday’s Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association Championships at Kahului Harbor.
The family visiting from Tahiti was registered by Hana Canoe Club to paddle in the freshman men’s race, using the koa canoe that Temanupaioura’s father, Fafa Toofa, built for the club before his death. Master canoe builder Toofa also built koa canoes for the Kihei and Hawaiian canoe clubs.
