Kihei man arrested in sexual assault on 8-year-old

A Kihei man was arrested for investigation of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl after entering her family’s apartment in a complex on Keonekai Road early Wednesday, police said.

The 60-year-old man, who lives in the same complex, was arrested in the parking lot shortly after the sexual assault was reported at 12:15 a.m., said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the girl’s mother called police after being awakened by her daughter who was crying and said there was a man in the bedroom. The mother got up and walked down the hall, where she saw a man at the doorway to the girl’s bedroom, Rego said. He said the man reportedly was staring at the girl with a flashlight in his mouth.

After the mother asked the man what he was doing there, he ran, Rego said.

He said Kihei patrol officers responding to the call located the suspect, who fit the description given by the girl’s mother. He was wearing a dark-colored shirt and had a beard, Rego said.

Detectives, who also were called to the scene, were continuing an investigation Wednesday. The man was being held at the Wailuku Police Station for investigation of first-degree sexual assault and first-degree burglary.
