Man indicted on charges of burglary, alleged sex assault of 8-year-old girl

WAILUKU – A Kihei man has been indicted on burglary and sexual assault charges, following his arrest last week for allegedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl while she was sleeping in her family’s apartment.

During his arraignment Tuesday in 2nd Circuit Court, Zdenek Behuncik, 60, pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree burglary and two counts of first-degree sexual assault. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, pending a bail hearing Thursday.

Police said the girl was asleep in a bedroom with her mother and sister when Behuncik entered the apartment through the unlocked front door and sexually assaulted the girl shortly after midnight July 10.

After being awakened by her daughter crying, the mother saw a man standing over the girl with a flashlight in his mouth, police said. The mother got up, yelled and chased the man from the room, police said. The suspect ran down the stairs and into the parking lot of the complex on Kenolio Road.

After the mother called police and provided a description of the man, a Kihei patrol officer responding to the 12:15 a.m. call saw Behuncik, who fit the description of the suspect, walking quickly at the complex, according to police.

Behuncik was detained and found with a flashlight and key ring, police said.

Behuncik, who lives in the same complex as the girl and her family, was ordered to have no contact with them and to stay away from their apartment.

His trial is scheduled for Oct. 7.
