Marmac Ace Hardware opens its second store
The Marrs family has opened its second Marmac Ace Hardware Store, this one in Maui Lani.
This weekend, the family and the store at 11 Laa St. in the Maui Lani Village Center will celebrate its grand opening with coupons and discounts through Sunday.
Even as local family businesses were scaling back expansion plans and closing after suffering through the recent recession, Marmac Ace owner Bill Marrs said last year in an interview with The Maui News that he never changed his mind about opening in Maui Lani.
The family’s first store on Alamaha Street, which Marrs and his in-laws Betty and Joe McCurdy opened in 1972, will remain open.
There are now three generations of the Marrs family working in both stores.
“The reason we’ve been so successful is because of the support of the Maui community and because we’ve been blessed with great employees all these years,” said Bill Marrs’ wife and co-owner Maureen Marrs in a news release.
Today, the Maui Lani store, as well as other Ace Hardware stores, will be offering the “Children’s Miracle Network Hospital” promotion, which gives customers 20 percent off everything they can place in a special bucket for a $5 donation.
In The Maui News interview, Bill Marrs said that he likes to give back to the community, which has included sponsoring Little League teams and other activities, to keep children away from drugs and out of trouble.
He said that there is a need for a hardware store near Wailuku because new subdivisions are being built in the area, especially in Maui Lani.
