Police investigating assault on visitor

Police are investigating an assault early July 6 on a 40-year-old California man who was knocked unconscious, suffering a broken jaw and other injuries, after he was hit by two males fronting Kihei Kalama Village.

Kihei patrol officers went to the area near Three’s Bar & Grill after a 12:48 a.m. call, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said the victim couldn’t provide a statement at the time and appeared to be intoxicated and mumbling.

A witness reported that security officers had escorted the victim from the property before two males approached, with both punching the victim in the face before running away, Rego said.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Speaking Wednesday morning from his bed at the hospital, the victim, Farid Ghafelpour of Irvine, said he hadn’t been intoxicated that night and hadn’t been involved in an altercation. He said he could recognize the two males who assaulted him. Ghafelpour said he hoped someone would come forward to identify his assailants.

After undergoing surgery for his broken jaw and also suffering a broken rib and broken teeth, Ghafelpour said he was to be discharged Wednesday from the hospital and return home.
