Condition critical for attack victim

A 20-year-old German visitor was on full life support Monday at Maui Memorial Medical Center after a shark bit off her arm while she was snorkeling last week at Palauea Beach Park, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Jana Lutteropp was in very critical condition, said Maui Memorial spokeswoman Carol Clark. The family requested privacy “during this very difficult time,” she said.

The attack occurred at 4:41 p.m. Wednesday when Lutteropp was bitten by a shark while snorkeling about 50 yards offshore. Bystanders heard her scream and brought her to shore. Witnesses said that her right arm had been bitten off, and she had lost a significant amount of blood.

Medics arrived about 20 minutes later and took Lutteropp to the hospital.
