Shark sighting closes beach
Big Beach in Makena was closed for two hours Sunday afternoon after a lifeguard spotted a 14-foot tiger shark, said Maui County spokesman Rod Antone.
The shark appeared headed toward people in the water, prompting lifeguards to clear the beach, Antone said. He said that the beach was closed from 2 to 4 p.m.
It was expected to be open today, although county lifeguards and state Department of Land and Natural Resources officers were to monitor the area, Antone said.
