Bail remains at $500,000 for alleged meth dealer
WAILUKU – With a deputy prosecutor saying a defendant was a danger to the community, a judge kept bail at $500,000 Wednesday for a Wailuku man charged with selling methamphetamine.
Adam Evert, 31, had sought a reduction in his bail, with his attorney Cary Virtue saying Evert wasn’t a flight risk and could work with his wife.
Deputy Prosecutor Tracy Jones argued that Evert’s bail should continue.
He was arrested on a grand jury warrant charging him with first-degree methamphetamine trafficking and other drug charges after a police vice K9 dog alerted to the presence of drugs in a storage locker, Jones said.
In a Feb. 12 search of the locker, police recovered 99 grams of methamphetamine as well as Class A amounts of steroids, Jones said.
She said Evert told police, “I’m not a big fish. You should be looking at other people. But since there’s a big drug problem here on Maui, I might as well make some money off this.”
Evert told police the drugs were his, and he was selling them, Jones said.
“He doesn’t deserve to be out in the community,” she said. “He’s a danger to the community.”
Evert is a graduate of the Maui Drug Court program of treatment and supervision, she said. Court records show he successfully completed the program in July 2011.
A Nov. 12 trial is set for Evert. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, four counts of first-degree promotion of a harmful drug, second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, second-degree promotion of a harmful drug, two counts of fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug, second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug and seven counts of possessing drug paraphernalia.
When Evert was arrested on the warrant Aug. 30 at his residence, police recovered approximately 4 ounces of methamphetamine and smoking pipes from the home, Jones said.
An investigation is continuing in that case, she said.
Second Circuit Judge Rhonda Loo kept Evert’s bail at $500,000.
