Man arrested after driving into MPD parking lot
A Haiku man was arrested and taken into custody for intoxicated driving Wednesday after he sideswiped a police officer’s personal vehicle in the back parking area of the Wailuku Police Station, police said.
Stephen Dearborn, 45, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, second-degree criminal trespassing and leaving the scene of a collision involving damage. His bail was set at $1,300.
Two police officers who were in the back parking lot heard the collision at 2:19 p.m. Wednesday. One officer, who had been arriving to work at the station, stopped the 1986 white Suzuki two-door sedan that Dearborn was driving while showing signs of being impaired, police said.
Police said that the Suzuki had sideswiped a parked Toyota Tundra, damaging the driver’s side, before continuing on through the parking lot. The back parking lot is designated for Maui Police Department employee parking.
There was no immediate explanation for why Dearborn was in the police station’s parking lot.
After a police K9 dog alerted officers to the presence of drugs in the vehicle, police impounded the vehicle as part of an ongoing investigation, police said.
