PWF grounds vessel; hull damaged
A 64-foot Pacific Whale Foundation catamaran was grounded on the shoreline near McGregor Point early Tuesday morning after striking rocks about a quarter-mile east of the point, fire officials said.
The multihulled Ocean Odyssey departed from Maalaea Harbor around 4:30 a.m. when it struck the rocks and grounded outside the harbor, fire Capt. Bram DenHaan said. He said the four crew members, who were uninjured, were evacuated and that no hazardous materials were released into the ocean.
One of its hulls was damaged, DenHaan said.
In a statement posted at 1:30 p.m. on the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Facebook page, the foundation said that the vessel was scheduled for an annual hull inspection and dry dock and was headed to Honolulu when it grounded.
A large tow vessel from Oahu and a salvage team will try to refloat the vessel during high tide this morning.
“We are working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard,” the PWF statement said. “Please rest assured we will work nonstop to remedy this situation as quickly as possible.”
