Sakamoto to be honorary fair director
The chancellor of the University of Hawaii Maui College will be the honorary fair director for the 91st Maui Fair in October.
Clyde Sakamoto, who has been at the helm of the college since 1991, will be honored “for his significant community contributions,” said fair Managing Director Sherri Grimes. “Being the largest single event of the year on the island, this honor gives the Maui Fair the opportunity to express its appreciation to an individual in our community.”
Sakamoto spent a year as interim provost of the then-Maui Community College before assuming the role officially in 1991, the college website said. He previously served as dean of instruction at the college.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Sakamoto earned credentials at the Institute of World Affairs and attended Santa Clara Law School. He also holds a master’s in education from UH-Manoa and a doctorate in education from George Washington University.
The fair will open with its traditional parade Oct. 3 and will continue with rides, food, entertainment and more through the evening of Oct. 6 at the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku.
