Police identified 78-year-old Marc Sandstrom of Carlsbad, Calif., as the snorkeler found floating unresponsive Tuesday evening off Napili Point.
Sandstrom went missing after he had been seen entering the water near Napili Point to go snorkeling at 3 p.m. Tuesday. When he did not show up to meet family members an hour later, they called 911, a Maui Fire Department spokesman said Tuesday.
Napili, Lahaina, and Kahului firefighters searched for the man and were assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard.
At 6:10 p.m., the Fire Department’s Air One rescue helicopter spotted the man 75 yards off Napili Point. The man’s body had no signs of life or trauma when it was retrieved by a Lahaina fire rescue boat.
