Applications for Lanai deer hunting are now available
Application forms and instruction sheets for axis deer hunting on Lanai will be available beginning today at state Division of Forestry and Wildlife offices statewide, the Department of Land and Natural Resources announced.
Dec. 6 is the deadline to submit applications.
Hunters need to obtain documents to be aware of changes in the application process. Because of a Dec. 31, 2007, appellate court ruling, application and tag fees for the 2014 Lanai axis deer season have been waived.
The island’s axis deer season will consist of three hunts:
* An archery-only hunt from Feb. 15 to 22.
* A muzzleloading hunt conducted for two weekends, March 1 and 2 and March 8 and 9.
* A general rifle hunt held over nine weekends, from March 15 to May 11.
Hunter assistants only will be allowed to accompany hunters who are senior citizens (age 65 or older) or those with disabilities.
The deer season’s bag limit will be two axis deer (one doe and one of either sex) per hunter for the archery season and two axis deer (one doe and one of either sex) per hunter for the muzzleloader and general rifle hunts. Tags are not transferable and are valid only for the hunt for which they are issued.
There will be no lottery drawing of permits for the archery-only hunt and no limit on the number of archers allowed to participate. Interested archers must submit an application for a permit.
Hunters participating in the archery-only hunt will be allowed to apply for, and participate, in either the muzzleloader hunt or the general rifle hunt lotteries.
Participation in the muzzleloading hunt and general rifle hunt will be assigned by lottery drawing. Interested hunters may apply for either the muzzleloading hunt lottery or the general rifle hunt lottery but may not apply for both.
Applications for all hunts may be submitted in person or mailed to the Maui Division of Forestry and Wildlife Office, 54 S. High St., Room 101, Wailuku 96793. Lanai residents only are to mail or deliver their applications to the Lanai Forestry and Wildlife Office at 917 Fraser Ave., P.O. Box 630661, Lanai City 96763.
Public drawings to assign hunting dates and standby numbers will be held Jan. 10.
