Hearings’ focus home business

Six hearings on a proposed bill to permit and regulate home-based businesses in certain zoning districts will be held throughout the county by the Maui County Council Planning Committee.

The meetings will be held from Monday to Dec. 3. Council Member Don Couch, who chairs the panel, said his committee will review and discuss allowable types of home businesses and develop appropriate regulations for particular operations.

“I want to encourage entrepreneurship and support residents who want to earn a living from home,” Couch said. “However, we need to address what constitutes a ‘nuisance’ or other inappropriate commercial activities that potentially impact community character and quality of life for neighbors.”

The meetings are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

They will be held Monday, Kihei Community Center Main Hall; Oct. 30, Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center Social Hall in Pukalani; Nov. 5, Helene Social Hall, Hana; Nov. 14, Council Chamber, Wailuku; Nov. 20, Mitchell Pauole Center Main Hall, Kaunakakai; Dec. 3, Lahaina Civic Center Social Hall.

Lanai residents may contact the council’s Lanai District office at (808) 565-7094 for assistance in submitting testimony.

Meeting agendas and the bill are available on the committee website at www.mauicounty.gov/committees.pc. For more information, contact Couch’s office at 270-7108 or by email at pc.committee@mauicounty.us.
