Light fixture causes garage fire
A faulty light fixture started a fire in a Kaanapali resident’s garage Friday afternoon, but the homeowner’s son was able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said.
Firefighters responded to a 5:47 p.m. alarm of a structure fire at 41 Pihaa St., with witnesses reporting smoke and flames coming from a garage below a two-story home, Mainaga said.
Before firefighters arrived at the scene, the homeowner’s son had extinguished the fire, he said. Estimated property damage was $500 to a light fixture, wooden panels and a beam.
Firefighters investigating the cause of the fire determined that a light fixture outside the garage caught on fire and moved up the wooden walls and under the balcony above the garage, Mainaga said.
No injuries were reported.
