Solar, lights, action

FIRST PHOTO: Haleakala Solar workers (from left) Jeffrey Eckford, Leroy Brown, Mike Stills and Ikaika Hoopii install photovoltaic panels on the roof of Wailuku’s historic Iao Theater on Thursday morning. When completed, there will be 100 panels on the roof that will help supply some of the electrical power to the theater, said Maui OnStage Executive Director Alexis Dascoulias. She is hoping the panels will be functioning by the end of the month and help offset Maui OnStage’s current $3,500 monthly electrical bill, where much of the costs are driven by the air-conditioning system and stage lights.

SECOND PHOTO: The photovoltaic system was made possible through the support of a private entity with the help and the blessing of Maui County, which owns the theater, Dascoulias said. Maui OnStage rents the theater from the county.
