Wailuku man critical after a head-on car, truck crash

A 32-year-old Wailuku man was critically injured Thursday afternoon when the car he was driving crossed the centerline to collide with a pickup truck on Mahalani Street in Wailuku, police said.

The crash was reported at 5:08 p.m. near Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said that the brown 2005 Ford Focus was traveling north toward Kaahumanu Avenue when it crossed into an oncoming lane to hit a red 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck that was heading south. The 30-year-old Wailuku man driving the truck wasn’t injured, but his 1-year-old son suffered minor injuries and was treated at the hospital, police said.

The Ford driver wasn’t wearing his seat belt and his airbag was deployed, police said. He suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

The airbag in the truck also deployed, and its driver was wearing his seat belt. The child in the truck was secured in a rear-facing child safety seat in the middle of the back seat, police said.

At one point, Mahalani Street was closed at Maui Lani Parkway while police investigated the crash. The northbound portion of the road was later opened with contraflow traffic in alternating directions.
