American Maui flights delayed

Two American Airlines flights between Maui and Los Angeles International Airport were affected Friday after a fatal shooting at the Los Angeles International Airport closed parts of the facility, a state official said.

American Flight 161 from LAX to Maui left around one hour late because of the incident, and American Flight 14 was scheduled to leave a half-hour late from Maui because of its late arrival from LAX, said Marvin Moniz, Maui District Airports manager.

United Airlines and Delta also have flights between Maui and Los Angeles, but they were not affected, Moniz said.

As a precaution after the airport shooting, the Hawaii Department of Transportation stepped up security at airports statewide for several hours, officials said. Additional security guards were called in where possible, and security was tightened at curbside areas, checkpoints and throughout the airports.

All employees were reminded to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity.

As more information became available about the shooting, it was determined there was no credible threat to Hawaii. Security measures returned to normal around 11 a.m., officials said.

The incident at LAX occurred around 6:20 a.m. Hawaii time. A Transportation Security Administration employee was killed, and two other officers were injured.

Hawaii’s Airports Division has plans and protocols for such incidents at its airports, a DOT announcement said.

The department advised travelers to check with their air carrier for any flight delays.
