Inouye institute head to speak at fundraiser
Jennifer Sabas, director of the Daniel K. Inouye Institute, will be the speaker at the 10th annual Nisei Veterans Memorial Center fundraising dinner, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Maui Beach Hotel Elleair Ballroom.
“It will be like having Senator Inouye speaking at our dinner,” said nisei veteran and NVMC Board President Hiroshi Arisumi. “We are grateful that Jennifer will be with us.”
She will share special stories from the late senator, a news release about the event said.
The theme of this year’s dinner is “Heart and Soul of a Living Memorial.” At the event, Leonard Oka will present 10 oral history projects that were transcribed from the words of the nisei veterans of World War II. Oka has worked for more than 30 years to build the NVMC to honor his father, the late Clarence “Hekka” Oka.
Bernice Hirai will be playing koto during the no-host cocktail hour, and Jeff Kashiwa, contemporary jazz saxophonist, will perform during dinner.
The dinner buffet is $100 for adults, $25 for veterans and/or spouses and $15 for children ages 6 to 11. For more information, contact Office Manager Melanie Agrabante by phone at 244-6962 or by email at email@example.com.
