Man arrested after allegedly attempting to hot wire a car

A Kihei man was arrested after he was caught trying to “hot wire” someone else’s vehicle at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center over the weekend, police said.

Matthew Pappas, 36, was charged with attempted unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His bail was set at $1,000.

He was arrested at 12:06 a.m. Sunday after a couple returned from a movie to the vehicle parked fronting Koho Grill and Bar and saw Pappas in the vehicle, police said. Pappas was seated in the vehicle and trying to start it, police said.

The man, who was using his brother’s car, confronted Pappas while the woman called police.
