Two charged in robbery, kidnapping

Two Lahaina men were charged with first-degree robbery and kidnapping Thursday after allegedly threatening to kill a Napili man the day before, police said.

Bradley Kuartei, 35, and Sitenili Kafoa, 41, also were charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree terroristic threatening and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. Bail was set at $27,000 each.

The incidents began at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when the 41-year-old victim called police, while he was being kidnapped, police said. Kuartei and Kafoa had entered the victim’s home earlier and threatened to kill him if he did not leave with them, the man told police.

The two men demanded the victim pay a large sum of money that he did not have and forced him into his Toyota sedan, police said. The men allegedly drove the victim to a storage location to retrieve paperwork for his car and, prior to driving to another location, Kafoa was dropped off at a park near the Honokowai Marketplace.

At 2:10 p.m., a Lahaina patrol officer identified the car and ordered its driver to stop within the marketplace, police said. Kuartei, who was driving, was arrested and taken to the Lahaina Police Station. Kafoa was later arrested at the park after being identified by the victim.

No injuries were reported.
