Man who died at resort identified as Lahaina resident
A man whose body was found last week on the grounds of the Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club in Lahaina has been identified as Christopher Reed, 53, of Lahaina, police said.
He died after falling onto pavement in an atrium area below balconies at the resort, said Maui police spokesman Lt. William Juan.
The man was found unresponsive when Lahaina patrol officers responded to the resort around 6:40 a.m. Dec. 2, police said.
Juan said police have classified the case as an unattended death and were continuing to investigate.
The day after the body was found, police released a photo of Reed and asked for the public’s help in providing information about him.
That evening, Krystal Cabiles, manager at Kamaaina Loans in Wailuku, saw the photo on her Facebook news feed and recognized the man as having done a transaction at the business about two months earlier. Because he had forgotten his identification at the business, an employee had met Reed in West Maui and dropped off the Virginia identification, Cabiles said.
Richard Dan, owner of Kamaaina Loans, said the business showed a Lahaina police detective the video surveillance of the transaction with Reed and also used its special skip-tracing software to provide police with information including possible relatives of the man.
Police released Reed’s name Wednesday after notifying relatives of his death.
“I’m glad there was some closure,” Dan said. “We do everything we can to help the police.”
