2014 schedule released for Kahoolawe trolling

The Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission has announced its 2014 schedule of weekend dates for permitted trolling in waters near the island.

Only permitted vessels that have registered with the commission before entering the reserve will be allowed to troll on the designated dates. Registered vessels are required to file catch reports anytime they fish in the reserve, whether fish are caught or not.

A $25 permitting fee will be applied to the required registration process.

Waters around the reserve will be open from 12:01 a.m. Saturday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday on the weekends of: Jan. 25-26; Feb. 8-9 and 22-23; March 8-9 and 22-23; April 5-6 and 26-27; May 10-11 and 17-18; June 7-8 and 21-22; July 12-13 and 26-27; Aug. 9-10 and 23-24; Sept. 6-7 and 20-21; Oct. 4-5 and 18-19; Nov. 1-2 and 15-16; and Dec. 6-7 and 20-21.

Access to Kaho’olawe Island Reserve waters, which are within 2 nautical miles of the island, are highly restricted because of the continued presence of unexploded ordnance, as well as for the protection of marine resources within the reserve.

However, during two scheduled weekends each month, limited trolling is allowed in reserve waters deeper than 30 fathoms for permitted vessels. All other fishing, ocean recreation, commercial or any other activities are strictly prohibited.

To register or for more information, contact Dean Tokishi at 243-5889 or send email to dtokishi@kirc.hawaii.gov. To download an information packet, go online to kahoolawe. hawaii.gov.

Packets also are available at the state Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation at 101 Maalaea Boat Harbor Road.
