Break some eggs, build a winner
First photo: Kalama Intermediate School 8th-grader Shayne Thompson, 13, explains how he drew upon a design by Leonardo Da Vinci to create his egg drop copter, which successfully transported a raw egg to the ground after being dropped from a second-story balcony during the fourth Maui Regional Science Olympiad on Saturday on the University of Hawaii Maui College campus. He said that he broke a few eggs during the design and testing process, but it worked fine on the big day. Maui Preparatory Academy was the Division B (Middle School) winner; Carden Academy Team A finished second and St. Anthony Junior Senior High School was third. In Division C (High School), King Kekaulike High School Team Black took first place followed by St. Anthony Junior Senior High School and HP Baldwin High School. The winners advance to the state finals March 1 on Oahu.
Second photo: Carden Academy 7th-grader Gabby Alford, 12, tosses her egg drop device off a balcony while demonstrating the fan-type spinning lander that she made along with classmate Daniella Wittenberg. Earlier in the day, their machine successfully landed a raw egg.
