Grand opening set for Imi Ikena units

A grand opening celebration will be held today at the King Kamehameha Golf Club for the 28-unit Imi Ikena Apartments, which was completed in November, according to an announcement from the project developers.

The four-story affordable rental apartment project was controversial in late 2012 and early 2013 when a high-pitched vibrational hammer was used to build a retaining wall at 511 Imi Place in Wailuku. The machine’s pounding shook the ground in the Sand Hills area and made it impossible for neighbors who were home during the work to carry on a phone conversation.

Today’s ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. at the golf club in Waikapu because there’s not enough parking available near the property, according to an email from an employee of EAH Housing, the property manager.

A company official said that all of the apartment units are occupied.

“The development meets goals set out by the Wailuku Redevelopment Plan to improve existing infrastructure, create construction jobs and improve the curb appeal of the area,” the announcement said.

Apartments include a washer and dryer, high-speed Internet, ceiling fans and a lanai. The building features a picnic area and a “tot lot” for children to play.

The project was developed by the nonprofit EAH Housing and Imi Ikena Housing Partners LLC. Its architect was Leslie Lippich; the civil engineer, Otomo Engineering; the landscape architect, Chris Hart & Partners; and the general contractor, Hunt Building Corp.

The project is financed in part by a $2.75 million loan from the county’s affordable housing fund, which was used as leverage for additional financing.
