Kihei man dies after being struck by truck

A 47-year-old Kihei man died when he was struck by a delivery truck while crossing Piikea Avenue in Kihei early Wednesday, police said.

The collision occurred at 4:31 a.m. just west of Liloa Drive, police said.

The pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was identified as Kenneth Elf.

Police said he was struck by a 2005 GMC box delivery truck that was traveling east. After the truck struck the pedestrian, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crossed left of the centerline and hit a chain-link fence on the north side of the road before coming to a stop in a vacant lot on the north side of Piikea Avenue, police said.

The pedestrian wasn’t in a crosswalk when he was hit, police said.

A 56-year-old Kula man was driving the truck.

The traffic death was the first this year in Maui County, compared with one at the same time last year.
