School fires investigated

Police investigated two arson fires reported about a half-hour apart Monday night at Upcountry schools.

Police reported finding evidence indicating that Molotov cocktails were used to start both fires.

The first fire, reported at about 9 p.m. at King Kekaulike High School on Kula Highway in Pukalani, burned a 1-square-foot area of brush, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Police said there was black scorching at the base of a Maui Electric Co. street light pole at the entrance to the school and a broken glass bottle with a piece of cloth that was apparently used as a wick to ignite the contents.

At about 9:30 p.m., another brush fire was reported at Seabury Hall on Olinda Road in Makawao. According to police, a broken glass bottle with a piece of cloth was found at the entrance to the school, causing $250 damage to a pillar.

Police are investigating fourth-degree arson in both fires.
