2 arrested after infant injured
Two Kahului parents were arrested Thursday after police discovered their infant daughter was injured during a struggle over her custody.
Dane Nakama, 20, and Kayzia-Ashley Washington, 21, were charged with second-degree assault, abuse of a family and household member, and first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.
Nakama’s bail was set at $12,000 and Washington’s at $3,000.
Medical personnel first notified police about the suspicious injury to the girl earlier on Thursday when her mother brought her to a clinic for treatment, Maui police spokesman Lt. William Juan said. Police discovered that the girl sustained the injury during the struggle between Nakama and Washington, who was holding her at the time, he said.
Injuries to the infant girl were not life threatening, and both parents are being held at Maui Community Correctional Center, Juan said.
