Crash kills Lahaina woman

A 26-year-old Lahaina woman died after she suffered life-threatening injuries in a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday on Honoapiilani Highway in Lahaina, police said.

She was identified as Kelley Peterson.

The crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. at the intersection with Shaw Street.

Peterson was the front-seat passenger in a 1990 Toyota Corolla that was heading north when it struck a traffic signal pole in the east median at the intersection, police said. The car continued through the intersection, hitting a second traffic signal pole and coming to rest, police said.

A 30-year-old Lahaina man was driving the car.

Peterson was treated at the scene and transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she died.

The driver also was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for injuries that weren’t life threatening.

Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash. While the car is equipped with automatic retractable shoulder belts that were used, both occupants weren’t wearing lap belts, police said.

The traffic death was the second this month and third this year on Maui County roads, compared with two at the same time last year.
