Crash kills motorcyclist

A 55-year-old Makawao man died Saturday when the motorcycle he was riding crashed head-on into a car on Baldwin Avenue north of Kee Road, police said.

The man’s name was not released, pending notification of family members.

The collision happened at about 12:50 p.m. when a 2008 Nissan Versa, driven south on Baldwin Avenue by a 69-year-old Makawao man, crossed left of the centerline and collided with the motorcyclist traveling in the opposite direction, police said.

The Nissan driver had been wearing his seat belt and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries, according to police. The motorcyclist, who had been riding a 2013 Kawasaki, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died, police said. He had been wearing a helmet.

Police had not determined whether excessive speed or driver impairment with drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. An investigation was ongoing.

Baldwin Avenue was closed while police investigated the crash scene. It was reopened by 4 p.m. Saturday.

The crash marked Maui County’s second fatality this year, compared with one at the same time last year.
