About 450 parents and children of Lihikai Elementary School and others attended the final Read Aloud America event of the school year Friday night on the Kahului campus. The event featured Kahului state Rep. Justin Woodson and around 17 others who read to students, ranging from toddlers to 8th-graders. Each student received a book of his or her choosing, and prizes such as an ukulele, a Lego set and a GoPro camera also were given out via a drawing. Maui program coordinator Larry Laird, who ran the event along with his wife, Joanne, said the event aimed to build family values and turn off electronics. “We don’t teach reading. What we provide is a program that expresses a love for reading and being read to,” Laird said.
