MPD officials awarded for bravery
FIRST PHOTO: Maui Police Department patrol officer Erik Losvar accepts the Maui Fire Department’s Kahuola Award from Chief Jeff Murray on Thursday at the Kahili Golf Course Restaurant in Waikapu. Looking on are Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa (left) and outgoing Fire and Public Safety Commission Chairman Mark Vaught. Losvar and fellow patrol officer Joshua Kalb were honored for entering a burning condominium unit at the Kaanapali Royal Resort on June 12 to save the life of an 84-year-old man. Losvar found the man unconscious on the floor down a hallway and dragged him toward the door. Kalb joined Losvar to help carry the man to safety. Unfortunately, the man would later die of his injuries. Murray called the officers’ actions “extremely heroic.” The presentation came during the meeting of the Fire and Public Safety Commission.
